Discovering Topeka: God’s Storehouse and Judee’s Coffee

Now that the weather’s finally shaping up, I’ve been getting out and exploring more around Topeka. Now that most of our boxes are unpacked and we are settled into our rental home, I realized I had a few things I didn’t need—stuff that didn’t quite fit or just didn’t make sense in our new space. So off I went to find a good local thrift or resale store to donate them.

Someone had mentioned a place called God’s Storehouse, and I found out there are actually two locations in Topeka. I headed to the west side spot since they take donations during the day.

A Hidden Gem

Tucked just off a main road, it’s one of those places that’s easy to miss if you’re not looking for it. Honestly, when I pulled in, the building didn’t look like much. But the parking lot was full, which I took as a good sign. After dropping my donation, I decided to pop inside and look around.

WOW. Let me just say—this place completely surprised me. It’s probably the most clean, organized, and well-curated thrift store I’ve ever stepped into. The quality of the items was great, the prices were super reasonable, and the space was much bigger than it looked from the outside. Of course, I found a couple of little things I “couldn’t live without.” (You know how that goes.)

As I made my way to the register, I asked the cashier a little more about the store’s mission—and that’s when I really fell in love with the place.

Generosity in Action

She explained that God’s Storehouse isn’t just a thrift store—it’s a ministry. They give clothing and household goods to families in need at no cost. They also resell donated items at low prices to help support their work and recycle gently used things back into the community.

Their mission? To love God and love people.
And honestly, you can feel that heart the moment you walk in.

From their website:

“As a ministry, we help people in our community who have gone through difficult times, by giving items such as clothing, furniture, and household goods. In addition, we resell the donated items at a reduced cost, recycling them back into our community. God’s Storehouse partners with churches, agencies, and other non-profits to help empower individuals in achieving a new start.”

A Sweet Surprise Next Door

After my little shopping adventure, I noticed a cozy-looking spot right next door—Judee’s Coffee. I wandered in and was instantly charmed. It’s small, warm, and inviting with a few places to sit, a simple menu, and the smell of fresh coffee and baked goods. I grabbed an iced coffee and couldn’t resist one of their chocolate cookies (zero regrets).

Iced coffee + a cookie = the perfect thrift store reward.

One Last Thought

Back in my car, sipping my coffee and nibbling on that cookie, I had a moment of total appreciation. God’s Storehouse is truly a hidden gem in Topeka—not just a fantastic thrift store with quality finds, but a community-focused ministry that’s doing real, meaningful work alongside local churches and nonprofits.

Well done, God’s Storehouse. Topeka’s lucky to have you.

The past few weeks I have been encountering a lot or examples of the growing “Gift Economy”. It replaces the current economic model which is based on “scarcity”.
Just think how much more valuable an item is when it is Given to you be someone special to you. It just might add another special person to your world of acquaintances.
