Sometimes, you want to help, but you’re not sure how.
“Can I make a difference?”
“Is it worth the effort?”
“Should I even try at all?”
But sometimes, you don’t need to try. You just need to do.
When my youngest son, Josh, was in elementary school, deep in his Star Wars phase, our favorite saying came straight from the wise and wrinkled Jedi master Yoda:
“Do or do not. There is no try.”
Great wisdom from a little green guy.
Whenever Josh felt overwhelmed, incapable or wanted to quit before even starting something, I’d quote Yoda. And honestly—how do you argue with Yoda?
There’s something powerful about that shift in mindset. We often hear: “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”
By definition, try means “to make an attempt.” Instead of “trying” in the hesitant, halfway sense—what if we just went ahead and did the thing?
We can often have hesitation when we know there is something God wants us to do. We may feel overwhelmed or incapable. But when the Lord is leading, we don’t need to analyze or overthink. We need to just obey.
“Do not merely listen to the word,
and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”
— James 1:22 (NIV)
When we know what’s right—what He’s already laid on our hearts—then “trying” can sometimes be a delay tactic disguised as effort.
Instead of trying, do. Do the next right thing.
He’s not asking you to figure it all out. He’s asking you to trust Him and take the next step. You’re not responsible for the outcome—just the obedience. God takes care of the rest.
So next time you’re hesitating at the edge of obedience, remember:
Don’t try. Just do.

Journaling Prompt:
Take time to reflect. What is something God may be calling you to do, but you’ve been hesitant to take that first step? Spend some time journaling or writing a prayer asking God for direction today.
