There’s something special about exploring Topeka’s NOTO Arts and Entertainment District. This vibrant corner of Topeka on North Kansas Avenue has become the heartbeat of local creativity—bursting with color, art, music, food, and community. On our latest visit, we enjoyed two stops: a cozy, independent bookstore and a restaurant that takes grilled cheese to a whole new level.
The NOTO District: Creativity Around Every Corner
NOTO is more than just a place for art—it’s an experience. With over 40 outdoor murals and sculptures, fine art galleries, unique shops, and vibrant events with live performances on the weekends, the district is always alive with energy.
Lunch at The Wheel Barrel: Comfort Food with a Twist
First on our list: lunch. We headed to The Wheel Barrel, a local favorite known for its gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches and large selection of craft beers and artisan cocktails.
The restaurant itself is small but welcoming, with rustic wood interiors that feel both casual and cozy. Out back, a garden seating area gives you more space to gather with friends and enjoy your meal in the fresh air.

Their menu puts a gourmet spin on other sandwiches too besides their famous grilled cheese. My choice was the How Now Bleu Cow (bleu cheese, mozzarella, roast beef, bacon, balsamic caramelized onion jam, and garlic parmesan aioli on sourdough) which was unbelievably delicious!
From their famous grilled cheese to their award-winning, seasonal and signature sandwiches, every bite is packed with flavor. Pair it with one of their craft beers, and you’ve got a meal that truly hits the spot.
Round Table Bookstore: A Haven for Book Lovers

After a filling lunch, we walked down to the Round Table Bookstore. It’s a perfect fit for the eclectic NOTO neighborhood. Independently owned, it’s the kind of bookstore that draws you in the moment you walk in the door.
Independent bookstores always carry their own unique vibe, and Round Table is no exception. With shelves full of both new releases and gently used favorites, you can wander for hours. There’s even a coffee bar tucked just inside the entrance, plus comfortable seating that invites you to linger with your finds.

One of my favorite spots was the upstairs loft, where decades-old books line the shelves. This is the place where you can flip through a well-loved novel and let time slip away.
Whether you’re searching for the latest bestseller, a thoughtful gift, or just a cozy spot to sip coffee and read, Round Table makes you feel right at home.
