Jael: When God Uses the Unexpected

Part 3 of this month’s Women of the Bible series

Read Judges 4:17-23 and 5:24-27

Have you ever been caught in an unexpected moment where you had to make a quick decision, knowing the outcome could impact many more people than just yourself?

Maybe it was a conversation where the truth had to be said.
A moment when you needed to stand up for what was right.
Or a situation where you knew staying silent just wasn’t the right choice.

Those moments can be intimidating, and we might question whether we’re the right person to step up or if someone else could handle it better.

But sometimes God places ordinary people in exactly the right place at exactly the right time.

Let’s look at the story of a woman in the Bible who experienced one of those moments.

Her name was Jael.

An Unexpected Visitor

During the time of the Judges, the people of Israel had been suffering under the rule of Jabin, king of Canaan, and his military commander Sisera. For twenty years, Sisera’s powerful army kept Israel oppressed.

Sisera’s forces were feared because of their 900 iron chariots, a terrifying military advantage in ancient warfare.

God appointed Deborah, a prophet and judge, to lead Israel. She told the military commander Barak to assemble an army and take on Sisera’s troops. But Deborah also delivered an unexpected prophecy:

“The Lord will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.” (Judges 4:9 ESV)

Most people probably assumed Deborah was referring to herself.
But God had someone else in mind.

Once the battle broke out, Sisera’s army was crushed, and he escaped on foot, desperately looking for somewhere to hide.

Eventually, he came to the tent of a woman named Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite. The Kenites weren’t Israelites, but they lived nearby. Sisera thought he had found a safe place to rest.

Jael welcomed him into her tent.

She offered him milk to drink and covered him with a blanket so he could sleep. Exhausted from battle, Sisera quickly fell into a deep sleep.

Then Jael quietly picked up a tent peg and hammer—the same tools she would normally use to set up the family tent.

And in that moment, she struck down the enemy commander, bringing an end to the oppression he had led against Israel.

When Barak arrived searching for Sisera, Jael calmly showed him the defeated enemy.

Later, Deborah would sing a victory song and say:
“Most blessed of women be Jael.” (Judges 5:24 ESV)

Courage in the Right Moment

Jael’s story may surprise us, but it reminds us of something important.

God sometimes works through the most unexpected people.

Jael wasn’t a judge.
She wasn’t a warrior.
She wasn’t even an Israelite.

But when the moment came, she recognized the opportunity to stand on the side of God’s justice and acted with courage.

Most of us will never find ourselves on a battlefield like Jael did, but we all encounter moments that call for courage.

Sometimes that courage looks like:

  • speaking truth when silence would be easier
  • standing up for someone who is being treated unfairly
  • making a decision that honors God, even when it feels risky
  • trusting God enough to act instead of shrinking back

Jael didn’t have impressive weapons; she just made do with the tools she already had.
And in God’s timing, that was enough.

Sometimes it can feel like your role in life is small or overlooked, but Scripture often shows that God works through everyday people who are ready to act when the time comes.

Prayer

Dear Lord, Thank You for the story of Jael and the reminder that You can use unexpected people to accomplish Your purposes. Help me recognize the moments when You are calling me to act with courage and faith. Give me wisdom, strength, and trust in You when I face situations that require boldness. Teach me to rely on You and to use the gifts and opportunities You place in my life for Your glory. Amen.
