Time Isn’t Yours to Manage—It’s a Gift to Steward

At the beginning of every year, we hear the same messages: “Take time to get organized,” “Master your schedule,” or “Take control of your time.” Maybe you’ve said it yourself while staring at your planner with a mixture of hope and dread.

For many women, especially in midlife, time feels slippery—days run together, to-do lists multiply, and there’s always something pulling us in ten directions. The old idea of “time management” has been drilled into us since our working years or during the busy season of raising children. I used to believe that if I could just manage my time better, I could master everything.

But here’s the truth I’ve learned: You can’t manage time.

Time keeps moving—forward, relentless, and out of our control. As one leadership writer said, “You can no more manage the flow of time than you can control the tides.” * That really made me think. I realized I’d been asking the wrong question.

Instead of trying to manage time…
We need to steward it.

Time Stewardship: A Biblical Perspective

The Bible speaks often about stewardship—not just of money or resources, but of everything God entrusts to us. And time is one of those precious gifts.

Stewardship means being a faithful manager of what’s been given, not to control it, but to use it with purpose, care, and reverence.

The Apostle Paul wasn’t talking about keeping a tighter schedule—he was urging believers to live intentionally. We’re not promised tomorrow, but we are called to live today wisely, generously, and with eternity in mind.

In midlife, this message becomes even more poignant. Our time may look different than it did decades ago—but that doesn’t mean it’s any less valuable. In fact, now may be the most meaningful time to reevaluate how we spend our days and who we spend them for.

Three Ways to Steward Time Well

Be Present

Don’t live so much in your planner that you miss today’s blessings. Ask God to help you live in the present moment.

Be Purposeful

Take inventory of your commitments. Are they aligned with God’s purpose for you in this season of life?

Be Prayerful

Ask God how He wants you to use your time. His priorities may look different than your checklist.

Live it Out

  • Reflect on your current schedule. What activities energize you? What feels draining?
  • Are there time-wasters or distractions that you can let go of?
  • Ask: How can I use my time to serve, to create, to love, and to grow closer to God?

I got a lot from this post. I also decide on a word of the year and this year it’s “light”. In choosing a word I rely on what is happening in my life, things that hear or see and pray. I truly believe we are given time to be the best people we can be.

That’s a great word for the year! We definitely need more bright lights in the world right now, don’t we!
