“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”
— Isaiah 43:18–19 (NIV)
Have you ever found yourself thinking about how things used to be?
Maybe it was a time when life felt easier, your energy stayed consistent, and the days had a comforting rhythm. Midlife has a way of bringing change, whether we’re ready for it or not.
Roles shift. Routines change.
Things that once felt familiar start to feel unfamiliar.
And sometimes, without realizing it, we hold on tightly to what used to be.
When Letting Go Feels Hard
There’s a certain comfort in the familiar. Even if it wasn’t perfect or sometimes left you drained, at least it was predictable.
Stepping into something new can feel uncertain, and it’s often easier to stick with the usual—even if it’s not ideal—than to move toward something we can’t fully see yet.
That’s why today’s verse is so striking: “Forget the former things…”
To let go of the past doesn’t mean you forget it. Instead, it means you loosen your grip on it and allow space for what God is doing—even if it looks different than what you expected.
Don’t Miss the New Thing for You
The verse continues: “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”
Sometimes the “new thing” isn’t obvious. It doesn’t always come with a clear sign or a fresh start that feels exciting. It can look like:
- a shift in priorities
- a slower pace
- a new responsibility
- an unexpected change
And because it doesn’t match what we expected, we can miss it.
We can stay focused on what was… and overlook what is beginning right in front of us.
New Doesn’t Always Feel Comfortable
Here’s something we rarely talk about—God’s new work in our lives can sometimes feel like a real stretch. It might seem unfamiliar, move slower than we’d like, or honestly, be a bit uncomfortable. But sometimes—the stretching is part of the growth.
One of the toughest parts of starting something new is wanting immediate clarity. We want to see where it’s headed, how it will unfold, and what the final outcome will be.
But often, God doesn’t reveal the full picture. He invites us to take the next step—and to trust Him with what we can’t yet see.
A Quiet Invitation
If you’ve been feeling stuck or looking backward more than forward …
Maybe this is your reminder: God is still working.
He is not finished with your story.
He is not limited by your past.
And even if you can’t fully see it yet…
Something new may already be beginning.
