“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock.
If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in…”
— Revelation 3:20 (NIV)
It was a quiet morning, and I was sitting at my office desk when I heard a persistent tapping on the window. A robin had landed just outside, hopping along the ledge, tapping then pausing, tapping then pausing, as if it were expecting something.
After about a minute, he flew into the nearby oak tree, restoring the calm once more.
And I almost missed the message.
Most days don’t feel quiet. Instead, they can be filled with responsibilities, interruptions and a running list in your head that is never quite finished.
Even during the calmer phases of midlife, the mental clutter doesn’t always ease up. And amid all of that, it’s easy to overlook the quiet moments.
God Often Speaks in the Quiet
We tend to reach for God when life is chaotic and messy; when we need clear direction in times that feel uncertain.
But more often than not, we can miss His presence that shows up in quieter ways:
A moment of peace you didn’t expect.
A pause in your day that feels different.
A gentle nudge to slow down.
That morning by the window made me stop and think: How often is God trying to get my attention in small ways…and I’m too busy to notice?
Pausing and Noticing
It was then I realized—when my life was too full, there was no space left to notice His quiet knock for my attention.
Taking moments throughout the day to pause and focus our thoughts on God is a way of making space for Him, and those times of attention can transform the tone of the entire day.
That pesky, window tapping robin was a reminder that stayed with me.
Some of the most important moments are the quiet ones we almost overlook.
And sometimes, those are the very moments where God is closest.
The Invitation Is There
Revelation 3:20 paints a picture of Jesus standing at the door and knocking.
Not pushing His way in. Not demanding your attention.
Just waiting.
Waiting for you to pause long enough to hear Him.
Waiting for you to open the door.
Now is the time to slow down and make space for Him.
If you sense His knocking today, if something in you feels stirred or drawn, take a moment to pray and to open your heart to him.
Your past doesn’t disqualify you. Your present story doesn’t deter Him.
He loves you and He wants to be with you,
right now, right where you are.
