When Strangers Become Angels: A Family’s Unforgettable Encounter

Ever had a simple, everyday moment suddenly turn into something unforgettable?

It has been quite a few years since this remarkable encounter. It happened on a typical Friday evening. After my husband left for his night shift, the boys and I ran a couple of errands and then grabbed a quick dinner. We ended up at Taco Bell—not my first choice, but I was outvoted.

The restaurant was nearly empty, except for one woman who was reading alone at a table, surrounded by her Bible and what looked like study materials. Joshua, my youngest, (six years old at the time), and I found a booth near her while my oldest son, Matthew (12 years old), waited at the counter for our order. As we settled in, the woman glanced up and smiled warmly.

“You have a lovely family,” she said. Was it was because—for once—my boys weren’t bickering? That alone felt like a win.

We exchanged a few friendly words, and she mentioned she was waiting to go to a Bible study. She looked like someone’s sweet grandmother—grey hair pulled back in a simple bun, modest brown jacket and dark skirt, and sturdy, orthopedic shoes. Unassuming. Gentle.

Dinner came and went, and after we finished, Joshua and I walked across the dining room to get drink refills to take with us. When we returned, Matthew was deep in conversation with our dinner neighbor, still seated at her table. She looked up and said, “I can tell you’re a Christian family. There’s a peace around you.” Then, she asked me if she could pray for Matthew.

I could see how sincere she was. She said she considered it a privilege to pray for others. I said okay and Matthew nodded. The woman gently clasped his right hand in both of hers. Then, she began to speak a blessing over my oldest son.

This woman’s words weren’t just generic encouragement. She described him with such remarkable accuracy! She told Matthew that he would have a love for people and become a great leader like King David—not because of power, but because of the love that others will have for him. He was encouraged to be a warrior, for he will have to stand up for what is right and make decisions that wouldn’t be popular.

Matthew didn’t say a word, but I could see how deeply her words touched him. I was fighting back tears myself.

We thanked her, said goodbye, and left the restaurant to our car. But before I could start the engine, Matthew spoke up.

“I want to go back in. I filled out one of those comment cards—they did a good job with my order, and I want to drop it off.”

The box was just inside the restaurant door, so I let him go. It took him just moments to do his errand. But when he returned, there was a look of confusion on his face.

“Mom… she’s gone.”

“What do you mean, gone?”

“She’s gone. And all the stuff she had with her —it’s not there anymore. It’s like she was never there. The table was wiped clean and the chair pushed in. Did you see her leave?”

I hadn’t. In fact, we had parked right in front of the entrance and would have seen her walk out. We drove slowly around the building. No sign of her. No car that might’ve been hers. It was as if she had vanished.

Of course, maybe she was lightning fast. Maybe she had help cleaning up. But deep down, we knew there was something more. Matthew talked about that moment all evening. And honestly, I still remember that event from time to time—enough to write about it.

Could she have been an angel? Did we have a heavenly encounter—at Taco Bell?

Later, I remembered Hebrews 13:2:

Whether this woman was sent from Heaven or simply inspired by it, I believe she was there for a purpose. Her words weren’t just a kind gesture. They were a blessing—one that Matthew needed and one I’ll never forget.

How beautiful and yes I believe in angels. I actually went to heaven, could see everything down on earth but was told I needed to get back to my family. This happened in 2000 and it's still so clear in my mind.
