Explore Austin: Outdoor Adventures for Everyone

June is National Great Outdoors Month—a perfect excuse (not that we need one) to get outside, stretch our legs, and reconnect with nature. If you’re craving fresh air and fun, Austin, Texas, delivers with its blend of scenic trails, sparkling waters, and iconic local flavor. Whether you’re planning a girls’ getaway, a solo retreat, or a weekend with family, there’s something for everyone in the Texas sunshine.

Cycling is big in Austin. However, you don’t have to have a professional touring bike. There are still places for beginning bikers to hit the road

If you are doing a walking tour and decide it’s time for a break, stop by TREK rental on South Lamar and choose from mountain, hybrid or electric bikes.

For an even more leisurely ride, explore The Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail around Lady Bird Lake—perfect for cruising and people-watching.

Kayaking on Lady Bird Lake is a favorite watersport activity, and paddleboards are popular. Or opt for a classic experience by renting a canoe. The Rowing Dock and Zilker Park Boat Rentals offer hourly rentals and guided tours, including sunset paddles and full-moon excursions for a bit of magic on the water.

Disc golf is another outdoor sport that is still popular today. Similar to golf, players use a disc or Frisbee. The game starts with a “tee-off” and ends at an elevated metal basket that serves as the target. There are currently 6 Austin city parks with disc golf courses. It’s also a fun way to try something new with friends that doesn’t require a lot of gear or skill—just a little aim and a good laugh.

Experience stunning views of the Texas Hill Country by ziplining one of Lake Travis Zipline Adventure’s five courses, including the longest zipline in Texas that spans over 2,800 feet! Boat rentals also available.

Austin offers a variety of popular, scenic swimming areas for cooling off. Barton Springs Pool, fed by natural spring water, stays at a refreshing 68°F year-round and is a local favorite. However, if natural waters don’t appeal, several municipal pools are available for a quick dip.

Whether you want to go for your daily run, enjoy a leisurely walk, or embark on an easy hike, Austin offers numerous scenic spots to visit year-round. Remember sunscreen, water, a hat for protection, and a camera to capture the moments! The Travis County Parks website provides a list of the finest hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and other multi-use trails across the county. My favorite is the Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve for peaceful trails and a chance to spot Texas wildflowers or wildlife. It’s a quieter spot offering a slower pace if you’re seeking serenity more than a sweat session.

If you are looking for a more leisurely stroll, browse an outdoor farmers market. The Texas Farmers Market at Mueller is open Sundays year-round. always with fresh produce and artisan goods from local farmers.

Watch Bats

At sunset between March and early fall, over a million Mexican free-tailed bats take flight from beneath the Congress Avenue Bridge—forming a mesmerizing ribbon across the sky. It’s the largest urban bat colony in North America and a one-of-a-kind Austin experience. Arrive early for a good viewing spot along the bridge or book a boat tour on Lady Bird Lake for a unique view from the water. Bring a camera—this is something you won’t forget!

Discover Wildlife

Nestled in Zilker Park, the Austin Nature & Science Center offers a fun, interactive way to enjoy the outdoors—especially for nature lovers. You can explore shaded trails, visit the rescued wildlife exhibits, and even dig for “fossils” in the Dino Pit. It’s a great spot for a relaxed afternoon, whether you’re solo or with grandkids in tow. Bonus: admission is free!

Although not classified as a sport, there’s nothing like ending the day outdoors with a delightful treat — ice cream!

If you want to try creative, locally sourced flavors like Goat Cheese & Thyme or Texas Sheet Cake, Lick Honest Ice Cream has three locations in the Austin area.

Boasting 14 locations in Austin, Amy’s Ice Cream stands out as a beloved destination for top-notch ice cream. Renowned for its signature Mexican Vanilla, Amy’s offers a selection of over 350 rotating flavors to satisfy every palate.

Take a Sip

When the day is over, you can still enjoy the outdoors with an evening sip. Austin is well known for its craft beer and wineries. Meanwhile Brewing Co. combines great beer, food trucks, and live music with lots of shaded outdoor seating.

A favorite is the Salt Lick Cellar with tasting room in Driftwood, just outside Austin. Best part about this location—its right next door to the infamous Salt Lick BBQ, featured on Food Network. Plenty of scenic seating to enjoy a sip and some brisket.

Whether you’re floating on the lake, biking along the river, or enjoying a scoop of Mexican Vanilla under a shady oak, Austin makes it easy to enjoy God’s creation and refresh your spirit. The best part? You don’t have to do it all in one weekend—just choose your favorite adventure and savor the moment.
