You’ve probably seen social media videos where someone finds an outdated item at a thrift store and transforms it into something beautiful. While not everyone has the time for elaborate DIY projects, thrift stores offer a wonderful opportunity to experiment with creativity without spending a lot of money.

One of my favorite discoveries since moving to Topeka has been a thrift store called God’s Storehouse. Not only does the organization provide practical help and hope to those in need, but the store itself is clean, welcoming, wonderfully merchandised —which makes looking for unexpected treasures all the more fun.

They’re also one of my favorite places to look for gift ideas.

Some people hesitate at the thought of giving something thrifted because they assume gifts should purchased new. But many older items were made with better craftsmanship, unique details, and a character that’s hard to find today.

When you know the recipient well, a thoughtfully chosen thrifted item can become a gift that’s far more meaningful than something picked up from a big-box retailer.

Look for something unique and create an instant gift by adding fresh flowers, faux stems, or seasonal greenery.

8. Wooden Boxes and Small Chests

These often get overlooked. A little polish or paint can turn them into beautiful keepsake boxes, prayer boxes, recipe boxes, or jewelry storage.

Many thrift stores have beautifully embroidered pieces that can be washed and gifted as-is, framed as décor, or paired with kitchen-themed gifts.
