“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1 NIV)
Nearly 250 years ago, 56 men from different backgrounds signed a document declaring freedom from England and King George III. The Declaration of Independence emphasized liberty, individual rights, and the desire for self-government.
But freedom didn’t happen overnight. It took over eight years of war, sacrifice, and determination to turn the declaration into real independence. Once the war was won, steps were taken to ensure the new nation could govern itself and break free from the control, taxes, and laws of another country.
In a different way, the believers in the church of Galatia were struggling with breaking free from control and laws too.
Breaking Free of Legalism
After receiving the gift of salvation through Christ, some believers began debating whether Gentile Christians should still follow certain parts of the Old Testament law, specifically circumcision. Instead of fully embracing the grace Jesus offered, they started drifting back into rule-keeping and spiritual bondage.
Paul reminded them that Christ had already set them free. Salvation wasn’t about following the law, but about God’s grace. He pointed them back to Jesus’ teaching—that the heart of God’s law could be summed up in this: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Galatians 5:14)
Today, we can still allow our hearts to become enslaved. How? By letting fear, shame, bitterness, worry, perfectionism, and people-pleasing to weigh us down until we no longer live in the freedom Christ intended for us.
Jesus didn’t save us so we would continue living chained to guilt and striving. Through His death and resurrection, we were set free—not only from sin, but from the exhausting pressure of working to earn God’s love or prove our worth.
As we celebrate Independence Day this week, it’s worth asking ourselves: Are we truly living in the freedom Christ has already given us?
If life’s worries and pressures have been draining your joy and pulling you away from the freedom Christ has given, take it to God in prayer today. Ask Him to help you release those burdens so you can fully live in His grace.
