Squirrel Adventures: A Window into Nature’s Comedy

Many people find squirrels adorable, funny, or even a little annoying—but whatever your opinion, there’s no denying their antics can be incredibly entertaining.

Since moving into our new Kansas home, I’ve been reliving the simple joys of Midwestern life. While we enjoyed the deer, roadrunners, jackrabbits, and yes—even tarantulas—during our time in Texas, seeing the robins, rabbits and squirrels each day has been a delightful change.

Three squirrels have claimed the area around our house as their territory. As I sit with my laptop, I can look out the living room window and watch their comedy show—chasing each other through the trees, playing hide-and-seek on the branches, and occasionally pausing for a snack or a squirrel-style nap.

The following photos aren’t exactly award-winning—I had to keep my distance so I didn’t ruin the moment—but they still capture the charm of the moment!

A squirrel perched on a tree branch, resting its front paws on a tree trunk and gazing curiously.
Is he staring at me?

Snack time.

The favorite resting spot.

There’s something so calming about watching squirrels — I still enjoy catching glimpses of them from my window, too. My cat, Pepper Jack, is usually focused on the birds, but I’m hoping he notices the squirrels one of these days! Your photos really do capture the charm. It’s lovely that your new home is offering these quiet, joyful moments.

I moved to the midwest from Texas (I’m originally from California) about 8 years ago. Animals I have seen in my downtown back alley: multiple types of squirrels, wild turkeys, skunks, ground hogs, eagles, hawks, seagulls, multiple types of birds, mice that have mickey mouse ears… Our cats very much enjoy watching the wildlife from their indoor perches.
