No Buy July: Rediscover Joy in What You Have

Somehow, July arrived before I realized it.

For the past few years, I’ve shared ideas for No Buy July—encouraging readers to spend less, appreciate what they already have, and discover that contentment often has very little to do with buying something new.

Then I had a thought —maybe I’m not the only one who feels like this month started before I was ready.

The great thing about No Buy July is that it doesn’t have to start perfectly. Whether it’s July 1 or midway through the month, there’s always a chance to be more intentional with your spending. Each day offers a new opportunity to make mindful choices.

No Buy July has never been about depriving ourselves or feeling guilty for every purchase. Instead, it’s an invitation to pause before clicking “Buy Now,” to appreciate what we already own, and to remember that joy isn’t found in accumulating more things.

In many ways, it’s less about saving money and more about creating margin.

Margin in our budgets.

Margin in our homes.

Margin in our schedules.

And even margin in our hearts, where gratitude has room to grow.

If you’re looking for a simple place to begin, here are three gentle ideas for this week.

Shop Your Home First

Before buying something new, take a few minutes to look around your home. You may already have exactly what you need tucked away in a cabinet, closet, or craft room. Sometimes “shopping” our own home helps us rediscover things we had completely forgotten about.

Use Something You’ve Been Saving

Do you have a summer shirt you’ve been waiting to wear? A scented candle you’ve waited to use? New craft supplies? Special tea? A journal you’ve been saving for “someday”?

Maybe that someday is today.

One of the unexpected lessons of No Buy July is learning to enjoy the blessings we’ve already been given instead of always waiting for the perfect occasion.

Pause Before You Purchase

Not every purchase is unnecessary, but many impulse purchases lose their appeal after a little time. The next time you’re tempted to add something to your cart, ask yourself:

Do I truly need this today?

Will this add lasting value to my life?

Could I wait a few days before deciding?

Often, that simple pause is enough to help us make a wiser decision.

Looking for More No Buy July Inspiration?

Over the past several years, I’ve shared a variety of ideas for making No Buy July practical and encouraging. If you’re looking for more inspiration, here are a few places to begin:

I hope these resources encourage you wherever you’re starting this month.

For those who follow Christ, contentment isn’t about how much or how little we have. It grows as we learn to see God’s faithful provision in every season of life. Often, one of the simplest ways to nurture gratitude is to pause long enough to notice all that we’ve already been given.

Here’s to a month of thoughtful choices, grateful hearts, and discovering that sometimes less really is more.

Hi, Angie! Good to see you. I’m feeling inspired by your post. I’m setting an intention to prioritize essentials but explore waiting when it’s not a must-have.

Great idea. I need to do this too.

Angie, what a great idea– No-Buy July! Many of us occasionally fling open our closet doors and “shop in the closet”. But what about spreading this concept to all categories of spending? Brilliant. And beautifully written. As Paul said, he had learned to be happy whether abased or abounding– maybe that’s good for all of us.

I love the concept of no-buy July.
We just purged our whole house and got rid of so much stuff that we just don’t use. At this stage of life we are only buying what we need now.

As an eco-conscious person, I looooove this challenge! I love “going shopping” at home. This is a great reminder as I am currently looking at my budget, as well.

I'd love to hear what you think!
