What if this July you could reset your spending, refocus on what truly matters, and reclaim a sense of contentment—all with one decision?
No Buy July is a four-week challenge designed to help you stop unnecessary spending and start living more intentionally—with your time, money, and resources.
For midlife women navigating a new season of life—whether it’s an empty nest, retirement, or just trying to simplify—this challenge can be a turning point.
I first learned about No Buy July on the Clutter Free Academy podcast with author and speaker Kathi Lipp. Kathi’s passion is helping people clear clutter and reclaim their lives. Her No Buy July Challenge is based on a World War II-era mantra: Use it up. Wear it out. Make do. Do without.

Why Try a No Buy Month?
Think of it as a spending reset.
This challenge isn’t about deprivation—it’s about making room. Room in your budget. Room in your home. Room in your life. It’s also not about perfection, but being more intentional with what we buy, eat, use, and keep.
After this 4-week challenge, you’ll likely discover less clutter, new creative habits, more gratitude and possibly some extra money in your bank account. It worked for me—one year I saved over $500!

Ready to give it a go? Together, we’ll walk through four themed weeks that help you use what you have, spend with purpose, and give back generously.
Let’s get started!
Week 1: Shop at Home—Use What You Already Have
This first week is all about awareness. Before we buy more, let’s pause and take stock of what we already own. The goal—stop buying and start noticing.
Focus Areas:
- Pantry + freezer
- Household + cleaning supplies
- Toiletries + bathroom products
- Craft or hobby stash
You’ll probably be surprised at how much you’ve already accumulated: things you forgot you had or never got around to using. This week, take inventory.
Challenge Tasks:
- Do a pantry and freezer inventory
- Plan meals around what you already have in your pantry and freezer
- Create a “use it up” basket for shampoos, candles, or skincare
- Get creative with your craft stash—rediscover forgotten hobbies
“She looks well to the ways of her household…” — Proverbs 31:27 (ESV)
Let’s be wise women who make the most of what we’ve already been given.
Week 2: Shop Your Closet— Rethink Your Purchases
Now that we’ve tackled the pantry, it’s time to look at daily habits. This week we will l look at those impulse buys that can drain the budget: clothes, makeup, coffee, or convenience items.
Read more—”How to Benefit from Shopping in Your Home” here.
Focus Areas:
- Closet (clothing, shoes, accessories)
- Makeup + beauty products
- Daily spending habits (coffee runs, drive-thrus, etc.)
- Impulse / browsing buys
Challenge Tasks:
- Shop your closet—create 5 outfits from what you already own
- Use up makeup, skincare or samples before buying more
- Brew coffee at home for the week (and put the money you saved in a jar!)
You may find pieces that feel new again or rediscover your true style.
“But godliness with contentment is great gain.” — 1 Timothy 6:6 (ESV)
Contentment isn’t passive—it’s a practice. Find joy in what you already own.
Week 3: Save Smart — Easy Ways to Stretch Your Budget
Now that you’ve paused buying and noticed your habits, let’s get intentional with what you do spend. Week 3 focuses on easy, practical ways to save money—especially on groceries and everyday items.
Read more—”4 Simple Ways to Save Hundreds on Groceries” here
Focus on the 4 Ways to Save on Groceries:
- Stick to a rotating meal plan
- Shop your freezer first
- Skip expensive snacks or convenience foods
- Choose generic when possible
Challenge Tasks:
- Plan a week’s meals using your existing pantry/freezer
- Stick to your grocery list
- Avoid non-essential shopping trips
- Try a no-spend weekend challenge
- Re-evaluate meal plan subscriptions to see if you really need them
“Know well the condition of your flocks and give attention to your herds.” — Proverbs 27:23 (ESV)
In our modern life, that might mean: your grocery stock, spending, and thoughtful choices.
Week 4: Declutter Smart —Dispose and Donate
Let’s finish strong! This final week focuses on cleaning out, letting go and giving to others. Complete these tasks first—organization can come later. I use the 3 D’s:
Declutter. Dispose. Donate.
- Declutter with intention.
- Dispose of unusable items.
- Donate gently used items to bless others.
Read more—”Declutter, Dispose and Donate” here
Focus Areas:
- Closet + clothing
- Bathroom + toiletries
- Pantry + unused foods
Challenge Tasks:
- Declutter bathroom items you won’t use—throw away used; donate new
- Let go of clothes that no longer fit, or really aren’t your style
- Toss or recycle stained, torn, or expired items (trash, don’t donate!)
- Start donation boxes for clothing, household items, and nonperishable food
Where to Donate:
- Goodwill or Salvation Army
- Women’s shelters (new toiletries & gently used clothes)
- Local churches or food pantries (check what items they accept)
“A time to keep, and a time to cast away.” Ecclesiastes 3:6 (ESV)
Sometimes letting go is the kindest thing we can do.
Bonus: Involving Your Adult Kids (or Grandkids)
If you’re in a season where your kids are grown or have grandkids nearby, this is a beautiful chance to model stewardship and generosity.
- Invite adult children to go through their own closets or storage
- Share donation tips and local resources
- Do a food or toiletries drive as a family project
- If you have grandkids, let them help choose toys to “bless another child”
You’re not just decluttering—you’re discipling.
Live It Out: What No Buy July Teaches Us
No Buy July is an invitation to a more contented life; it’s about resetting your perspective, practicing stewardship and responding with gratitude. By using what we have, avoiding excess, and giving to others, we reflect the heart of God in how we live day-to-day.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above …“ —James 1:17 (ESV)
Everything we have is a gift—and a new focus helps us treat it that way.
