We all have a past.
Some chapters have wonderful memories. Others carry regret and grief. And while it’s true that our past undoubtedly shapes who we are, it doesn’t have the final say—not when we walk with a God who is both present and powerful.
Even though we are told, “Don’t let your past interfere with today,” it often does. Old wounds, missed opportunities, shame, or guilt can weigh heavily on us, clouding our perspective. We wonder how we can truly move on—instead of feeling stuck in a cycle of what-ifs and if-onlys.
But here’s the truth: God didn’t create us to live stuck. His mercy meets us in the present. His healing frees us from the chains of the past. And His promises point us toward a future filled with hope.
God Is With You—Right Now
When Moses asked God for His name, the Lord responded, “I AM.” He is present tense —in this moment. And that’s where we’re invited to live, too.
The Psalmist says in Psalm 16:11, “You make known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in your presence.” To walk in that path, we have to be willing to stop striving. Stop mulling over the past. Stop imagining the worst about the future. Be still—and know that He is God.
Looking Back—With Mercy
There are moments when looking back is necessary—not to dwell in regret, but to reflect with mercy. As Stasi Eldredge writes in Becoming Myself, “The temptation is to look back with regret rather than with mercy. But God’s eyes are filled with mercy. We can be merciful too.”
That kind of looking back brings healing, not shame. It opens the door to forgiveness and repentance—two keys that release us from captivity. When we forgive (others and ourselves), we’re no longer chained to the pain. When we repent, we stop dragging our brokenness into the future and let God begin something new.
Living in the Present—Fully and Faithfully
Being “present” is more than a catchphrase—it’s a mindset rooted in faith. It means inviting God into our now, focusing our attention on Him and on what He’s calling us to today.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10
“Fix your thoughts on Jesus.” – Hebrews 3:1
“Set your minds on things above.” – Colossians 3:2
Living in the present takes effort sometimes. It means to focus beyond distractions, have contentment over comparison, and watchfulness over worry. It means trusting God with the unseen future—because He already knows it perfectly.
If your past has been weighing you down, let today be a fresh start. You are not defined by what happened to you, your regrets, or your mistakes.
You are a beloved daughter of the Great I AM.
He is with you now—and that’s enough for today.
Journaling Prompts:
- What part of my past still weighs heavy on my heart?
Ask God to help you see it through His eyes—eyes of mercy, not shame. - How have I seen God bring healing or growth from something I once regretted?
Reflect on how He’s been present, even in painful seasons. - Is there someone I need to forgive—or something I need to repent?
Ask God to put on your heart the person, or the transgression.
