Does God Give Us More Than We Can Handle?
Thank heaven for best friends.
Joanna glanced at her phone and smiled. It was her friend Ginny calling—a familiar name that brought a breath of relief. Even though Joanna’s day was packed, she decided to take a few precious minutes for the friend she hadn’t caught up with in ages.
She had already put in four hours of remote work that morning and was trying to use her lunch break to get caught up on housework. Her son’s uniform needed washing before his game tonight, and she still hadn’t figured out what to do for dinner.
After a few minutes of casual chatter, Ginny paused then asked, “So… how are you really doing?”
Joanna sighed audibly. “I just don’t know how much more I can add to my plate. Jeff’s company is talking about layoffs, and no one knows if his department will be affected. And remember how our lease is up in two months? The owners are definitely moving back. I’m not even sure if we’ll be able to find another place in time.”
Ginny listened, as she always did—with kindness and compassion. From a state away, she wished she could do more to help.
“I’ve prayed and prayed,” Joanna said, her voice weary. “But it doesn’t feel like we’re getting any answers.”
“I know times are tough,” Ginny replied. “But you’re strong. You’ll get through this. Remember, God doesn’t give us more than we can handle.”
Joanna nodded, but the thought lingered in her mind: Well, it sure feels like He does.
Many of us have been in Joanna’s shoes—feeling overwhelmed by circumstances and wondering where God is in all of it. When we pray, we often hope God will remove the burden altogether. That feels like the answered prayer we long for.
But God is our Father, not just our Rescuer. And like any good parent, He sometimes allows hard things—not to punish us, but to teach us. In difficulty, we often gain wisdom, maturity, and dependence on Him that we wouldn’t learn any other way.
Sometimes, our prayers need to shift from “Help me out of this” to “Give me strength and wisdom through this.”
- Strength to endure painful seasons like loss, illness, or uncertainty.
- Wisdom to make better decisions about finances, relationships, or how we manage our time.
- Discernment to know when to say no—and the courage to ask for help when we’re running on empty.
So does God give us more than we can handle?
Yes—if we’re trying to handle it all on our own. The Apostle Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV):
“But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
When we finally admit that we can’t do it all, that’s exactly where God meets us—with grace, not guilt. Strength to overcome our weakness.
The truth is, we were never meant to carry life’s weight alone. God walks with us. He promises to give strength, wisdom, and even peace in the middle of the storm—not just at the end of it.
And… He gives us each other.
When life becomes too much, we need the grace to admit it—and the humility to receive help from God and from others. That’s not weakness. That’s faith in action.
Journaling Prompts:
- What burden or situation in your life currently feels “too much”? Write it out and ask God for wisdom and strength to face it.
- Have you been relying on your own strength to get through something hard? How might you invite God and others into the process?
- Who is someone in your life that you can be a support to this week? How might God use you to help carry someone else’s burden?
