Maybe it was over lunch with a friend who doesn’t go to church. During the conversation, she mentioned that she’s never seen any proof that God is real or that He cares what’s going on in people’s lives.
As you sit there, you might think, “I know God is real—He has done so much in my life since I became a believer!” Yet, you might be hesitant because you feel you don’t know enough about the Bible to share Jesus with others.
However, if you’ve experienced the work of Jesus Christ in your life, you can share the story of how He has changed you!
The Man Who Couldn’t Stay Silent
In Luke 8, there’s a man whose life was so completely changed that he couldn’t wait to share his story with everyone around him.
Jesus and his disciples had sailed across the Sea of Galilee to the region of the Gerasenes. As soon as Jesus stepped ashore, a man possessed by demons who lived among the burial graves came to meet him.
The man fell at Jesus’ feet, and shouted, “Jesus, Son of the Most High God! What do you want with me? I beg you, please don’t punish me!” This wasn’t the man speaking, but a demon. When Jesus asked, “What is your name?” it answered, “Legion,” meaning there were many demons tormenting the man.
The story continues with Jesus casting the demons out of the man and into a herd of pigs, that charged off a cliff into the lake and drowned. The commotion attracted a crowd, and they were stunned to see the man they knew from the burial grounds sitting calmly at Jesus’ feet, clothed and in his right mind. They could hardly believe he had been healed.
Grateful for what Jesus had done for him, the man said, “Let me come with you.” But Jesus told the man to go back home and share with others what God had done for him.
The man went through his town, sharing with everyone that the Messiah had arrived and healed him. He became a living example of what Jesus was capable of.
Your Story Matters More than You Think
How often have you tried a new restaurant and enjoyed it so much that you left a glowing Google review? Or discovered a product you loved and couldn’t resist sharing on Facebook? Or watched a movie so good you just had to tell your friends, so they’d go see it too?
In the same way, you can share your own story.
Many people get nervous about sharing their testimony, worrying they don’t know the Bible well enough or haven’t memorized enough verses to explain the gospel clearly.
Sometimes the most powerful gospel you can share is simply, “Let me tell you what God has done for me.” It doesn’t need to be perfect—just real and honest.
Who Needs to Hear Your Story?
And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. (1 Peter 3:15 NLT)
When we have a story to share about Jesus, sometimes all it takes is asking God to provide the opportunity. He’ll bring the right person at the right moment, along with the courage and the words to speak. That’s how the Holy Spirit works in our lives.
Your encouraging words could be shared with a stranger you may never meet again. You might not be there when they decide to give their life to Christ, but your story could be the one step that brings them closer to Him.
Your faith in God’s Word and His work in your life isn’t something to hide. For someone out there, you might be the opportunity they need to see and experience Jesus through you.
