Craft Your Own Flavor: 3 Must-Try Seasoning Recipes

I’ve always considered myself a simple cook. The fanciest meals I ever made were probably from a HelloFresh box a couple years ago—but even then, I learned an important lesson: flavor matters. It’s not about having the most ingredients or the trendiest gadgets—it’s about building taste with every layer.

Like many of you, I’ve had shelves full of spices and no clue what went with what. Over time, I’ve discovered that having a few go-to blends makes cooking faster, easier, and so much more flavorful. That’s why I started making my own spice mixes—not only to simplify mealtime, but to avoid hidden sugars or preservatives like MSG that sneak into store-bought blends.

Today I’m sharing three of my favorite homemade seasoning blends that I reach for in everyday cooking. They’re easy to mix up and keep on hand, and you can store them in empty spice jars, recycled containers, or even a good ol’ Tupperware cup with a shaker lid (my personal favorite!).

Whether you’re spicing up your taco meat or adding zip to eggs, these blends will elevate your meals without complicating your kitchen.

Homemade Seasoning Salt

8 Tbsp salt (table salt or sea salt)
1 Tbsp onion powder (not minced)
3 Tbsp pepper
1 Tbsp garlic powder
2 Tbsp paprika

Mix all ingredients thoroughly in a bowl and store in a small container with a lid. This all-purpose blend works well on beef, chicken, vegetables, eggs, and more.

Homemade Taco Seasoning

1 Tbsp chili powder
1 Tbsp ground cumin
2 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp Mexican oregano (or regular oregano)
1/2 tsp salt (table salt or sea salt)
1 tsp dried cilantro (optional)

Optional Add-ins: 1 tsp cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes for heat

Directions:
Mix thoroughly and store in a sealed container. Use this blend by the tablespoon to season taco meat, chili, pinto beans, fajitas, and other favorites. I use it so often I double the batch!

Italian Seasoning

2 Tbsp of each:  basil, oregano, rosemary
1 Tbsp each: thyme, onion powder, sea salt, garlic powder
Optional: 1 tsp red pepper flake or 1 Tbsp dried cilantro

Combine in a bowl and store in a container with a tight lid. This savory blend is perfect for homemade spaghetti sauce, creamy white pasta sauces, or even sprinkled on olive oil–coated noodles.

You don’t have to be a gourmet chef to cook meals full of flavor—just a woman with a spoon, a few seasonings, and a little creativity. Try one of these blends this week, and let it inspire you to bring a little extra warmth and goodness to the table.
