The Importance of Christian Friendship in Midlife

Today is National Best Friends Day—
a day that celebrates the friendships we hold close.

There’s something about friendship in midlife that feels different. It’s a season with moments that can make you feel like the new kid in school all over again.

That’ ‘s exactly how I felt at the first women’s church event I attended after moving to Topeka —the awkward feeling of being the only kid at the lunch table.

Before the event started, two women sat next to me and introduced themselves.
Now, I do life with them as part of a fun, encouraging group of women I’m incredibly grateful for.

In midlife, you begin to realize how much you need friends who truly get you—friendships that are deeper, more intentional, and rooted in genuine care.

And when those friendships are grounded in faith? They become something even more powerful.

What Makes Christian Friendship Different

A friendship rooted in Christ brings something unique to the table:

  • You share the same foundation.
  • You’re growing toward the same goal.
  • You’re anchored in the same hope.

That changes everything.

These are the friendships where you can lift each other up in faith, not just walk through life’s situations together. You encourage one another Biblically, pray for each other honestly, and point each other back to truth when life feels overwhelming

And when difficult seasons come—and they will—you don’t have to carry them alone.

Why Christian Friendship Matters More in Midlife

Let’s face it—midlife can be a bit complicated. You might be dealing with health issues, looking after aging parents, getting used to an empty nest, or just trying to figure out what this next chapter holds.

This is where Christian friendship becomes such a gift. These are the friends who—

  • text you before a doctor’s appointment because she remembered
  • don’t just say, “I’ll pray for you,” but stops and prays right then
  • help steady your heart when your thoughts begin to spiral

There’s a depth here that comes from growing through life and faith together.

If You Have a Friend Like This

Take a moment to thank God for the friendships in your life. Reach out to a friend who has walked with you in faith. Send the text. Say the prayer. Let her know she matters to you.

And if you’re in a season where friendship feels distant or difficult, remember—God sees that too. He is faithful to provide what you need, in His timing.

And sometimes, the very friendship you’re praying for begins with becoming that kind of friend to someone else.

Journaling Prompts

  • Who in your life has been a steady, faith-filled friend in this season?
  • In what ways can you be more intentional in your friendships?
  • Are there areas where God is calling you to grow in love, forgiveness, or encouragement?
  • Pray and ask God to deepen your current friendships—or bring new ones into your life.
