Adult Coloring Books: Creativity Without Pressure

Visit many bookstores today and you’ll see shelves filled with adult coloring books. What began as a passing trend has become a creative outlet many women genuinely enjoy — not to become artists, but to enjoy the calm, pressure-free creativity that coloring offers.

The best part? You don’t need expensive supplies. You don’t need instructions. You don’t even need to know how to draw. You simply—color.

That simplicity is part of what makes coloring so appealing, especially during stressful or overwhelming seasons of life.

Coloring encourages us to slow down in a world that constantly tells us to hurry. It gives our hands something gentle to do besides scrolling on a phone. It provides a creative rhythm that feels restful instead of demanding.

And honestly? It makes sense.

Types of Adult Coloring Books

What surprised me was discovering that today, adult coloring books now offer floral designs, nature scenes, geometric patterns, faith-based pages, color-by-number books, and more detailed illustrations.

Geometric Patterns, Mandalas, and Repetitive Designs
Research has shown that structured coloring may help reduce stress and anxiety by encouraging concentration. Rather than dwelling on worries, the mind shifts to concentrating on coloring shapes, color choices, and patterns.

Botanical and Nature
Flowers, leaves, gardens, birds, and lifelike plant illustrations come to life with colored pencils, as shading and blending can produce soft, stunning effects.

A colorful botanical illustration featuring a vibrant purple plant on the left page, with detailed leaves and buds, against a beige background; the right page displays a monochrome sketch of the same plant, emphasizing its structure.
A vibrant illustration of a puffin on a rocky shoreline, next to a black and white outline drawing of the same puffin, showcasing its unique features.

Wildlife and Nature Scenes
Focusing on animals, oceans, forests, or vintage-style illustrations, these pieces attract those who appreciate artistic realism without creating art from scratch.

Faith-based
This category has also become increasingly popular, combining Scripture, floral illustrations, journaling prompts, or devotional thoughts. Coloring a verse slowly can become a meaningful way to meditate on God’s Word and spend quiet time with Him.

An open book page featuring a floral illustration alongside the text of Proverbs 30:8, which reads: 'Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches.'

Not every adult coloring activity involves traditional coloring pages, either. Color-by-number and sticker-by-number books have surged in popularity. They’re great for women who feel overwhelmed by too many creative choices and eases the pressure while still letting the mind relax and play. Plus, they’re just plain fun.

There’s truly something refreshing about engaging with beauty, color, and imagination — even in the simplest ways. Coloring can give us space to breathe, slow down, and enjoy something beautiful again.

So, dust off that box of color pencils, find a coloring book and enjoy some quiet creativity.

Nice! I have many friends who do coloring books. I don’t, but I can understand why they do. I don’t think I even did that many when I was a kid – it just was not my thing as I colored outside the lines. I drew my own images to color – that said I have toyed with making such books – but that idea is at not near the top of my projects list.

I LOVE colouring books, Angie!! 😍 I love the idea of creativity that asks nothing from us except to enjoy it. The colour-by-number books can be so good, especially to people who can overthink even a relaxing activity (me! 😅)

I'd love to hear what you think!
