How the Thompson Chain-Reference Bible Enhances Scripture Study

I received a complimentary hardback copy of the revised Thompson Chain-Reference Bible (TCRB) from Zondervan for review, and I’m excited to share what makes this Bible so unique. In this post, I’ll explain its origin, how the signature “chain” system works, and why it may be a valuable addition to your study routine.

The Vision Behind the Thompson Chain-Reference Bible

Dr. Frank Charles Thompson, DD, Ph.D., was a young preacher in the late 1800s who recognized a need: Bible study tools should be both scholarly and easy to use—for pastors and everyday readers. In 1890, he began developing a topical referencing system that would link related verses throughout Scripture.

These “chain links” became the foundation of the Thompson Chain-Reference Bible, first published in 1908. With encouragement from his congregation, Thompson’s unique Bible quickly gained recognition as one of the most practical and unbiased study tools available. He continued refining it for 40 years until his death in 1940.

What Makes this Bible Different?

Most study Bibles rely on commentary to explain Scripture. The TCRB does not. Instead, it guides you through Scripture by connecting Scripture to Scripture—letting the Bible interpret itself.

This updated KJV edition includes:

  • A condensed outline of the Bible
  • Periods of biblical history
  • Bible character studies
  • Messianic prophecies and their fulfillment
  • An extensive concordance
  • 13 full-color maps with indexes
  • Book introductions with author, date, theme, and summary

What you won’t find is a center-column reference section. Instead, the TCRB uses red-numbered “chains” in the margins—an entirely different way of studying God’s Word.

How the Chain-Reference System Works

Here’s a quick example of how the Thompson system connects Scripture through themes:

Let’s say you want to study Christ as Shepherd.

  1. Start in the Alphabetical Index of Topics (in the back of the Bible). Under “Christ,” you’ll find “Shepherd” with the red chain number 3264.
  2. Next, go to the Numerical Index and look up 3264. You’ll see “Christ Shepherd” with a list of verses in biblical order—starting with Psalm 23:1.
  3. Turn to Psalm 23:1, and in the margin, you’ll find 3264 with the next verse in the chain listed beside it.
  4. From there, follow each link—like steps in a pathway—to explore how that theme unfolds across Scripture.

This forward-reference system is intuitive and powerful. You can start anywhere in a chain and follow it through Scripture, gaining a full-picture understanding of a topic without needing external commentary.

Detailed instructions on how to use the system are included at the front of the Bible.

My Impressions

After using this Bible and learning the chain-reference system, I found several standout benefits:

  • Unbiased study: You study topically or verse-by-verse without added commentary, relying on context and Scripture itself.
  • Flexible tools: Resources in the back (like the Topical Treasury) are helpful for teachers, small group leaders, or personal study.
  • Historical clarity: Timelines, character studies, and maps offer strong biblical and geographical context.
  • Engaging layout: The clean design and margin references make navigation easy, even without a traditional center column.

My review copy is the updated King James Version (KJV), but the TCRB is also available in leather editions and other translations. The updated TCRB exists in KJV and NIV, while original versions are still available in NKJV, NASB, and ESV.

Is It Worth Buying?

Absolutely. If you want a deeper understanding of Scripture, and especially if you enjoy thematic or topical study, the Thompson Chain-Reference Bible is a time-tested tool that will guide you directly through the Word—verse by verse, link by link.
