From Snowfall to Setback: How to Stay Steady in the Unexpected

February in Central Texas is usually our last cold snap before spring warmth and bluebonnets arrive. But this February, we were blindsided by a winter storm unlike anything we’d ever experienced.

At first, it was fun—snow fell, covering our yard in fluffy white, and our dog Zoey (a German Shepherd-Chow mix) did zoomies like she was born for it. We had a snowball fight, drank hot cocoa, and took it all in stride.

But then came the ice. And the outages. And the water stoppage.

Power flickered off and on. Water stopped running. We were melting snow in pots to flush toilets and rationing meals so we could make groceries last. Every time the power came back on, we scrambled: quick showers, microwave meals, and charging every device we could.

At first, it was easy to stick to the plan, but it wasn’t long before stress and weariness was felt by everyone.

I was reminded how quickly our confidence can crack when things don’t just go wrong once—but repeatedly. It’s easy to feel strong at first, but harder to stay hopeful when the next unexpected hit comes. And then another.

God is Always a Steady Presence in Crisis

That week, God gently reminded me that He is our unshakable source of strength, not our conveniences. Not power grids or stocked shelves or digital comforts. When everything else fails, He doesn’t.

Scripture tells us,

Even when the lights go out and our plans fall apart, His presence remains steady. His help is not delayed. He doesn’t wait for us to have it all together before stepping in. He is our refuge—even when the world feels like it’s breaking down around us.

And yes, we cheered when warm weather finally came. But even more than 65 degrees, I was grateful for the reminder that God doesn’t roll in and out like power surges. He is faithful, constant, and near—even in the coldest seasons.

Here in Dallas/Ft Worth it was crazy, too. I'm a prepper but even I was caught off guard. I've always imagined issues during the summer but never in subzero weather. Thankfully we get our power/water and helped some friends who had trouble. It was a learn experience for sure. I wrote this blog post about prepping for disaster https://www.alesstoxiclife.com/health/ways-to-prepare-your-family-for-disaster/ and will be adding more to it as I get feedback from my friends on what else they wish they had prepped ahead of time.

They have changed to forecast — again — so maybe by Tuesday it will be 60 degrees!

It's lovely to be indoors and watching the snow when you don't have to get out, right? Stay warm!

I remember the snowstorms and power outings in the winters in upstate New York! I hope things get back to normal for you soon. We live on the east coast an a tornado hit about 6 miles from us and wiped out an entire subdivision of brick homes. I pray for all those in the paths of every storm.

Brrrr, I don't miss those crazy Texas winter storms. Lived through a few in my years there and the ice was always the worst. Texans are survivors! My dad is outside San Antonio and said it will be back in the 60s this weekend, that is crazy. Stay safe and warm.

Hey Angie,My friends who live in San Antonio sent me pictures of their little daughter playing in the snow in front of their house. Having moved there from New York, they are not as discomforted as some of their neighbors. I'm in New York and we're expecting our 5th snow storm tomorrow. It is forecasted as being slow-moving and will be dumping 4-9 inches of snow in my county. I'm looking forward to watching it happen from indoors.
