Like many avid readers, once I discover an author or genre I love, I’m tempted to stay there. The downside? My reading slows while I wait for the next book in a favorite series.
A few years ago, I decided to branch out and give audiobooks a try. Not only did they help me work through more books on my to-be-read list, but I also discovered unexpected wellness benefits along the way.
Whether you’re listening while taking a walk, folding laundry, or simply relaxing with a cup of coffee, audiobooks can be a wonderful way to care for both your mind and your reading life.
1. Relive the Joy of Being Read To
Remember being read to as a child? Audiobooks recreate that experience, making stories feel immersive and engaging. A talented narrator can bring characters to life in ways that make familiar stories feel fresh and new.
2. Give Your Eyes a Break
Between computers, phones, tablets, and televisions, our eyes rarely get much rest. Audiobooks let you enjoy a great story while giving your eyes a welcome break from screens.
3. Reduce Stress
Listening to an engaging story gives your mind permission to slow down. Whether it’s a lighthearted novel, an inspiring memoir, or a favorite classic, audiobooks can provide a peaceful escape at the end of a busy day.
4. Calm an Anxious Mind
When anxious thoughts begin to race, focusing on a narrator’s voice can gently redirect your attention. I’ve found that stepping into another story often helps quiet my mind and provides a welcome emotional reset.
5. Make Everyday Tasks More Enjoyable
Folding laundry, gardening, walking, cleaning the kitchen, or tackling yard work all seem to pass more quickly when you’re absorbed in a great story. Sometimes an audiobook is all it takes to turn an ordinary chore into something you actually look forward to.
6 Keep Your Mind Active
Reading in any format keeps us learning. Audiobooks expose us to new vocabulary, ideas, and perspectives while encouraging us to continue growing as lifelong readers.
Audiobooks have become one of my favorite ways to enjoy stories. They’ve helped me discover new authors, revisit beloved classics, and fit more reading into everyday life—all while making ordinary moments a little more enjoyable.
If you’ve never tried one, this might be the perfect time to start. You may discover that audiobooks aren’t just another way to read—they’re another way to slow down, learn something new, and enjoy a good story wherever life takes you.

I'd love to hear what you think!
