Sending Handmade Autumn Cards with a Twist

As the days turn cooler and the leaves begin to show off their brilliant colors, autumn always feels like the perfect season to slow down and savor time — especially for crafting. Recently I combined two of my favorite creative outlets—cross-stitch and cardmaking—to design some cozy autumn cards. Each one has a stitched design surrounded by layers of fall-inspired paper, die-cut leaves, and a heartfelt sentiment.

Mixing Crafts for a Unique Look for Projects

One of the great things about handmade cards is that each one is unique. For my autumn cards, I used small cross-stitch motifs from magazines as the focal point. Instead of framing the stitching, I decided to “frame” them on a card. It’s a lovely way to share a stitched design with someone special, without committing to the time a larger project would take.

Handmade Card Details That Add Warmth

  • Layers of paper: For the two cards shown below, I chose traditional colors in rich red, olive green, and ivory to set the stage, while patterned paper with leafy prints added movement and depth.
  • Die-cut leaves: Metallic and vellum leaves layered together created extra dimension and echoed the theme of the season.
  • A simple bow: A small twine bow brought in texture and a touch of rustic charm.
  • Stamped sentiment: “Sending autumn wishes your way” felt like the perfect message for this time of year. Great for a “thinking of you” card.

Ideas and Inspiration for Your Own Fall Cards

You don’t need to follow the exact same steps to make cards like these. Instead, think of them as a starting point for a card for any seasonal or sentiment:

  • Use small cross-stitch or embroidery motifs as the star of your card.
  • Match thread colors to your favorite patterned papers for a pulled-together look.
  • Experiment with seasonal details—leaves, pumpkins, snowflakes, or hearts—depending on the time of year.
  • Not into cross-stitch? Try using fabric swatches instead, or add some quilling or iris folding to create a unique design within a card frame.

A Handmade Blessing

Handmade cards don’t have to be complicated to be meaningful. By combining different hobbies, you can make something one-of-a-kind that feels personal and heartfelt. Whether you stitch, stamp, or simply layer papers, adding your unique touch makes your card extra special—just the thing for sending autumn wishes to brighten someone’s day.
