Every year I love taking part in Operation Christmas Child, a project by Samaritan’s Purse that delivers boxes filled with practical items and small gifts to children around the world—many of whom wouldn’t otherwise get to celebrate Christmas.
Years ago, when our kids were small, we always filled boxes for boys to match our own sons’ ages. Now they are grown, but I still look forward to doing boxes every year.
Thanks to stores like Dollar Tree, it’s easier than ever to find great items for both girl and boy boxes without spending a lot.

For every box that I pack, I always add these three essentials:

Extra Tips
Most of these items can be found at Dollar Tree, Walmart, or Michaels. To keep things organized, use zipper-style bags for small items so they don’t get lost in transit. And don’t forget to top off the box with a soft toy or fun surprise—something cheerful the child will see first when they open it!
