Discover the Town of Comfort: A Hidden Gem in Texas

Exploring small Texas towns is one of the things my husband and I love to do together. Each has its own charm—distinctive town squares, historic courthouses and a unique Texas story.

Usually, planning a road trip means deciding together where to go next. But this time, Chris planned everything—we were going to Comfort, Texas. I hadn’t heard much about this town, but I was wonderfully surprised.

Comfort, Texas, is nestled in the Texas Hill Country, about 100 miles southwest of Austin. The two-hour drive starts on Highway 290, winding through the ever-growing Dripping Springs before connecting to Highway 87. After passing through the charming town of Blanco, rolling hills soon emerge, welcoming you into Comfort.

Downtown Comfort

Driving down Main Street feels like stepping into the past. The old-fashioned barbershop, with its classic barber pole, looks as if time has barely touched its wooden facade. Through the open door, the local barber sits relaxed in his chair, newspaper in hand, waiting for the next customer to stroll in for a cut and shave.

Comfort offers a charming mix of shops, boutiques, and eateries, perfect for an afternoon of exploring. If antiquing is your thing, this town deserves a spot on your list.

Our first stop was ReDefined, a beautifully curated antique shop blending vintage treasures with modern finds and thoughtful gift ideas. The owner, practically Comfort’s unofficial concierge, welcomed us with friendly conversation—sharing insights about her store, must-visit spots, local eats, and the best morning coffee in town. As a bonus, we discovered that Comfort’s Annual Art Fest was happening the next day, adding an unexpected delight to our trip.

Comfort Antique Mall is a treasure trove of pieces from the past, and it’s easy to lose track of time exploring its many finds.

For your morning caffeine fix, Comfort Coffee is the go-to spot for a great cup. And when it comes to pizza, Comfort Pizza is the clear winner—they make their dough fresh daily. Tip: If you’re craving pizza for dinner, order early. Once they run out of dough, that’s it for the day!

A Historic Hotel

We stayed at The Hotel Giles, a local landmark dating back to 1880. It’s historic exterior is still reminiscent of its time, while the thoughtfully restored interior maintains its old-world charm.

Despite its vintage feel, the hotel seamlessly blends history with modern comforts—satellite TV, an electric car charging station out front, and, of course, air conditioning.

Tucked behind the hotel, the bungalows offer a private retreat. At first glance, the exterior was unassuming, but stepping inside revealed a charming, rustic space—warm, inviting, and complete with a comfortable bed perfect for unwinding.

Where the Locals Hangout

On Saturday nights, the town square comes alive as locals gather for a laid-back, BYOB evening of live music. The crowd is a mix of all ages—even a Willie Nelson lookalike—and the talent is pure Texas.

On our visit, a young, bearded millennial took the stage, strumming through ’70s classics before joking that he was “as country as an iPhone.”

Exploring a Secret Garden

Comfort’s best-kept secret just might be its Butterfly Garden, open on Saturday afternoons.

Tucked behind the Simply Comfort gift boutique, we strolled into a shaded oasis filled with many varieties of plants. Following the path around a workshed, we discovered the rest of the garden—overflowing with wildflowers, fragrant herbs, and other greenery. Monarch butterflies fluttered everywhere, drawn to the deep-purple Bull Thistle blossoms.

As we approached a stunning chapel-style greenhouse, we met its owner, Dinah, whose passion for the garden shines through in every detail. A science textbook author, she and her husband first met in New York City before marrying in Comfort. In 1989, they returned, purchasing an old stone house to renovate—one they still call home today.

Her husband, an architect, crafted the gorgeous greenhouse himself, blending artistry with function. Before we left, Dinah introduced us to her four ornamental chickens, each called by name (naturally).

Visiting Comfort

Visitors to Comfort will appreciate its slow-paced, relaxed atmosphere—a perfect setting for a weekend trip. Arrive midmorning, explore the shops, and order a pizza for an early dinner. Just keep in mind: many Main Street businesses start closing around 4:00 PM on weekends.

For a longer stay, take a short 20-minute drive from Comfort to Kerrville to visit the famous Coming King Sculpture Prayer Garden, or the James Avery jewelry flagship store and museum. Afterward, enjoy some classic country comfort food at Cracker Barrel.

A step back in time, charming shops, and a hidden garden—Comfort, Texas, has a little bit of magic for everyone.

I love that greenhouse and what a wonderful garden. Sounds like Comfort by name and comfort by nature.
