Have you ever caught yourself stuck in the past or overly focused on the future? It’s a common human struggle—but as women of faith, we know God calls us to something more. He invites us into the present moment, where His grace meets us day by day. Yet we often miss it, distracted by regrets or worries that keep us from truly living.
Yes, the past shapes us—but it doesn’t have to control us. With God’s help, we can choose to stop carrying what He’s already forgiven, healed, or is still redeeming. In When the Past Won’t Let You Go, counselor H. Norman Wright writes that we waste so much time not living in the present because we’re distracted by the “there and then rather than the here and now.” (1)
You’re not alone in this, and you’re not without hope. The past may walk beside us, but when we walk with God, it doesn’t have to lead.
5 Ways to Start Living in the Present
1. Practice gratitude. It may sound cliché, but expressing thanks improves emotions, relationships and even health. As Ralph Waldo Emerson, said, “Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you.”
2. Create spontaneous fun. Break routines. Plan a last-minute adventure, take a walk outside, or swap dinner for a fun breakfast-for-dinner night.
3. Connect intentionally. Being around people isn’t the same as truly engaging with them. If conversations keep revolving around the past, shift focus. Listen more, talk less, and reconnect with loved ones in meaningful ways.
4. Help others. Volunteering pulls us out of our own struggles and reminds us that everyone has a story. Lending a hand can bring unexpected joy and connection.
5. Join a support group. There’s power in sharing experiences and finding encouragement through others. Whether through therapy or groups like Celebrate Recovery, community can make healing easier.
Life happens in the present. That’s where God meets us—with fresh mercy, new purpose, and the quiet strength to move forward.
The past may tag along, but it doesn’t have to take the lead. And the future? It’s in God’s hands. By turning our focus to what He’s doing right now—and who He’s placed around us—we can live with joy, connection, and peace.
“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” – Psalm 118:24
Today matters. And with God, it’s more than enough.
