When my oldest son was away at college, one thing I loved doing was sending themed care packages. Some semesters I would mail two smaller packages, while other times I’d create one big, themed box. A favorite was an “international food box” filled with snacks from different countries (the store World Market is a treasure trove for these!), plus his favorite ramen to represent Japan. Occasionally, I’d just send a card along with a gift card, usually for DoorDash so he could order his favorite pizza.
Today, my son lives in another state and is soon to be engaged. Even now, I will send a little care package for him and his girlfriend, just to let them know they’re loved and thought of.
If you have a student—or another loved one—who could use some sunshine in a box, here are some creative care package ideas you can make your own.
7 Colorful College Care Package Ideas
Theme boxes are always as fun to create as it is to send! These ideas focus on one color or clever saying. Take one and add your own spin with snacks and necessities that are the same color. (Food ideas are always a win for students—because let’s be honest, snacks rule.) Add the quote on the inside flaps of the box or on a paper insert so it’s the first thing they see.
- RED – “Remember, You’re RED-iculously Awesome!”
- BLUE – “Sending this out of the BLUE, because we MISS YOU!”
- ORANGE – “Orange you glad Midterms [or Finals] are almost over?”
or “Any way you slice it, you’re awesome!” - YELLOW – “Sending you a box of sunshine to brighten your day!”
- PINK – “Pinking of You!”
- GREEN – “So lucky you are my kid!” or “Good luck on your [fill in here]!”
- TEAL – “Just wanted to TEAL you that you’re amazing!”

5 Care Packages that Are Beyond the Snacks
Care packages don’t have to be only food. Sometimes students appreciate practical or fun extras they wouldn’t normally splurge on themselves:
- Exam Survival Kit – Stress ball, highlighters, sticky notes, Emergen-C packets, chocolate (because chocolate is its own food group during mid-terms or finals).
- Budget-Friendly Survival Kit – Mix their favorite foods with gift cards for Amazon, Target, Starbucks, or fast-food restaurants.
- Game Day Box – For the sports fan: team T-shirt, game snacks, a Door Dash or pizza delivery gift card, and maybe a subscription to MLB or NFL channels.
- Self-Care Box – For a feminine touch: face masks, lotion or shower gel, fuzzy socks, hair scrunchies, or nail polish. Add hot cocoa for cozy nights in.
- Seasonal Cheer – For the first semester, send a fall-themed box with pumpkin snacks, hot cider packets, Halloween candy, Fall scented soap or cozy scarf. For the second, do a Valentine box with heart-shaped candy, pink or red wrapped snack treats, lip balm, cozy socks and maybe a movie gift card for a sweet date night.
The Heart Behind Care Packages
Care packages are more than just snacks or goodies—they’re a heartfelt reminder that someone cares. College life can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming and lonely at times. When your student opens a box filled with thoughtful, creative touches, it’s like receiving a hug from home. The good news is there’s no single “right” way to put one together—your creativity and love are what make it special and unique. Whether you’re sending cookies with a pair of cozy socks, or just a handwritten note, your thoughtfulness assures them they’re not alone. Every box is a little boost of encouragement, and that can make all the difference.
“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:11
