Last month I said goodbye to an old friend. Our relationship lasted five years.
The separation wasn’t easy. We shared many good times: vacations, concerts, long conversations, game nights, and lots of shopping trips—groceries included. It was a content, dependable partnership. No drama. No stress.
I never thought we’d part ways, but things started slowing down. There was no longer as much energy or responsiveness. Tasks together took longer. I tried to convince myself that it was fine, but it was my wise husband who gently nudged me to say goodbye.
So I did.
Now I’m in a new friendship—with a sleeker, more enjoyable companion. I’ve adapted just fine. I just needed a little push.
I love my new smartphone.
Funny how even something as simple as upgrading a phone can remind us of deeper spiritual truths. We often resist change—not because the new is bad, but because the old is familiar. Yet sometimes, God calls us out of what’s comfortable so He can do something better.
“To everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1 (ESV)
Change can be unsettling. Whether it’s a new season of life, an unexpected opportunity, or even a closed door, our first response might be to cling to what we know. But God doesn’t want us to stay stuck in the past. He invites us to trust Him with the new thing He is doing.
In the book of Isaiah, the prophet was called to speak God’s promises to a weary and exiled Israel. They longed for the past—familiar places, past victories, and comfort. But God had a different message:
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
— Isaiah 43:18–19 (NIV)
God wanted His people to stop looking backward and start trusting forward. Their situation may have looked like a wilderness, but God was already making a way through it. And He still does.
Maybe you’re standing at the edge of a new season, uncertain whether to take the next step. Maybe you’re holding on to something that once served you well but is no longer where God wants you to stay. Don’t let fear or comfort keep you from what God is preparing.
It’s not always easy, but growth rarely is.
“Undertake something that is difficult; it will do you good. Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.” — Ronald E. Osborn
When we trust God with change, He doesn’t just change our circumstances—He transforms us. He stretches us, strengthens us, and shows us more of who He is. And as we step into the new, we discover His faithfulness in ways we couldn’t see before.
So maybe it’s time for your “new thing.” Not just a phone upgrade, but a heart posture that says, God, I trust You with what’s next. What might God be asking you to let go of so He can give you something better?
God is already making a way. Consider this a friendly push to a new thing.
Journaling Prompt:
What is something you’ve been holding onto out of comfort or fear? Ask God to show you the “new thing” He may be inviting you into.
