“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10a
It’s easy to lose sight of today when we’re caught up in regrets from yesterday or uncertainties about tomorrow. In midlife, these distractions often multiply: we mourn what’s behind us— empty nest, a career that’s over, or the loss someone we love. At the same time, we worry about what’s ahead—our health, finances, or figuring out our purpose now life has changed
But God calls us to be present. To be still. To trust Him. Because this is the day that the Lord has made—and the one we’ve been given.
When the Past Pulls You Back
Sometimes it’s a sharp memory—something you wish you’d done differently. Or it’s a season you miss deeply, like when your children were small or your energy was boundless. These thoughts can leave us feeling stuck, even ashamed.
But the truth is: you don’t live there anymore. And that’s okay.
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!” – Isaiah 43:18–19 (NIV)
Letting go of the past doesn’t mean pretending it didn’t happen. It means trusting God’s mercy to cover what’s behind and leaning into the grace that’s here now. Even your mistakes are not wasted—God can use them for good (Romans 8:28). Midlife is not too late for new beginnings.
When the Future Feels Overwhelming
Worry loves to whisper worst-case scenarios. “What if my health declines?” “What if I’m alone?” “What if I never find purpose again?”
Jesus knew we’d struggle with this, so He gave us a simple command:
“Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” – Matthew 6:34 (NIV)
Worrying about the future doesn’t equip us—it exhausts us. God is already there. He’s not just the God of your past and present, but also the God of your tomorrow. And He’s faithful.
How to Live in the Now
Here are a few gentle ways to practice presence and let your heart settle into today:
1. Pray Daily for a Present Mind
Start your day with a simple prayer:
“Lord, help me to be present today. I give You my past and my future. Help me trust You with both.”
2. Create a Daily Rhythm of Gratitude
Write down three things you’re thankful for each day. Gratitude grounds you in what is, not what was or might be.
3. Do One Meaningful Thing Today
Whether it’s a creative act, a loving gesture, or a quiet rest—choose to do something today that reflects who you are and who God is shaping you to be.
4. Set Down the Burdens That Aren’t Yours
Not every fear or regret needs to be solved today. Ask yourself: Is this mine to carry, or am I trying to take control from God?
Letting go of the past and the future isn’t a one-time decision. It’s a daily surrender. A holy habit. A way of saying, “God, I trust You more than I trust my memories or my plans.”
Remember: You are not behind. You are not forgotten. You are not stuck.
You are here—today—and God is here with you.
So today, take a deep breath. Look around. Give thanks. And step into this moment.
