In our fast-paced and ever-changing world, finding time to disconnect, even for a short while, is essential. For creative individuals, numerous interruptions can hinder our imaginative processes. This post will explore practical steps and creative activities that can refresh your mind, ignite your creativity, and prioritize self-care.

No matter your personality type, having a routine can improve many aspects of life, even if it’s flexible. A pre-planned routine for days dedicated to recuperation or revitalization can provide a lift and prevent you from falling into a slump. Here is a list of things to consider when crafting a perfect mental health day:

First, set the tone for the day.

Start your mental health day with intention. Avoid reaching for your phone immediately. Instead, take a few deep breaths, stretch, pray, and read (or listen to) a short Bible passage to positively set your mind.

Grab your morning joe and a notebook and express gratitude, or let your thoughts run freely by writing morning pages. No judgment—just a stream of consciousness. This can be 5 minutes or 30 minutes. However long you need.

Start your day with a cozy reading session. Choose a book you’ve wanted to read for a while or something that brings you comfort and joy. Settle into a comfortable spot and immerse yourself in the world of your book.

For a successful mental health day, consider taking a break from social media. Disconnecting for a few hours can enhance your mood and focus, and the time saved from not scrolling can be redirected towards creative projects!

Next, plan a creative activity you love.

Nothing calms the mind and feeds the soul than doing an activity you love. This is certainly the focus of a self-care day. What would be your first choice? Here are some ideas:

  • Venture Outdoors – Take a leisurely walk and observe the details around you. Notice colors, textures, and patterns. Let your mind wander—it’s fertile ground for ideas. Whether it’s a stroll through a park, a hike in the woods, or a walk along the beach, being surrounded by nature can also have a calming effect on the mind and help alleviate stress and anxiety.
  • Engage the Imagination – Express yourself visually with your favorite art medium. Try a new craft project or return to a beloved one. Allow yourself to get lost in the creative process. Arts and crafts can be incredibly therapeutic and help you relax and unwind.
  • Try Intentional Cooking – Prepare a new recipe. Pay attention to the colors, flavors, and textures. Cooking can be a form of meditation. Then, sit and savor your meal without distractions.
  • Feed Curiosity – Visit an art gallery or museum, immersing yourself in creativity. Let them inspire your own works. Learn something new by watching an online tutorial related to your creative interests. Learning fuels curiosity.

Wind down the day gracefully.

As evening approaches, continue with a digital sunset. Dim the lights and reduce screen time as evening approaches, as blue light disrupts sleep patterns. As the day comes to a close, create a relaxing evening ritual for yourself. This could involve taking a warm bath with essential oils or simply curling up with a blanket and enjoying a rom-com. Journal about the day and reflect on what worked, what inspired you, and what you will do next time. Reflecting on your experiences can help promote self-awareness and emotional well-being.

Remember, crafting a mental health day is an ongoing practice. Tailor these suggestions to your own creative spirit. Prioritize self-care, embrace stillness, and honor your inner artist. Your creativity will thank you!

Your mental health day doesn’t have to be elaborate—just intentional. This week, set aside one day or even a few hours for your own creative reset. Pick two or three ideas from the list above that speak to you most. Write them on a sticky note or in your planner as a reminder. If it helps, share your plan with a friend to keep you encouraged.     Wow, those are all such great ideas! What strikes me is that when i have a self-care day planned, it might be that it doesn’t quite come together because it doesn’t have structure. Read this book, then watch that movie, then make a cup of tea, etc. I’m going to try that and see if it helps!
