In today’s world, self-help slogans are everywhere, but it’s important not to mix worldly advice with Biblical truth. Many popular phrases in culture often contradict the teachings of Jesus. Let’s explore some of these common sayings and see how they compare with Scripture. First, here are some things that Jesus never said.
5 Things Jesus Never Said
1. “Follow your heart.” Jesus said: “Follow Me.”
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” — John 8:12 (NIV)
“To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow His steps.” — 1 Peter 2:21 (NIV)
2. “Be true to yourself.” Jesus said: “You must deny yourself.”
“Then He said to them all: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.’” — Luke 9:23 (NIV)
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.” — Proverbs 3:5–6 (NLT)
3. “Believe in yourself.” Jesus said: “Believe in Me.”
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in Me.” — John 14:1 (NIV)
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16 (NLT)
4. “Live your truth.” Jesus said: “I am the truth.”
Jesus answered, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” — John 14:6 (NIV)
“The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” — Jeremiah 17:9 (NIV)
5. “Do what makes you happy.” Jesus said, “Don’t lose your soul.”
“And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?” — Mark 8:36 (NLT)
“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.” — Matthew 6:19-20 (NLT)
Besides these five sayings that Jesus never actually said, there are many other quotes often attributed to the Bible, even though they aren’t found there.
4 Common Sayings that Aren’t in the Bible
“God never gives us more than we can handle.”
The truth is—life can sometimes feel like too much. But that’s why we need Jesus. He didn’t promise an easy life; He promised His presence in the middle of our pain. Rather than giving us less than we can handle, God often allows us to face more than we can manage on our own—so we will turn to Him, rely on His strength, and grow deeper in faith.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33 (NIV)
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” — James 1:2–3 (NIV)
“God helps those who help themselves.”
This phrase sounds empowering, but it’s not found in Scripture. In fact, God’s promise is that He will help those who can’t help themselves. He doesn’t wait for us to be strong; He steps in with strength when we call on Him.
“For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, ‘Do not fear; I will help you’” — Isaiah 41:13 (NIV)
“Just forgive and forget.”
Jesus did tell us to forgive, but He never told us we had to forget what happened to us. Forgiveness is not about pretending something didn’t happen—it’s about releasing it to God and allowing healing to take place. Jesus forgave and restored Peter even after denying Him three times!
“And forgive us our sins, as we forgiven those who sin against us.” — Matthew 6:12 (NLT)
“Everything happens for a reason.”
This phrase may sound comforting, but it can be misleading. While God is sovereign and His ways are often beyond our understanding, not everything that happens is part of a divine plan. Sometimes, our own poor choices—or the actions of others—lead to painful consequences. Still, God promises that nothing is wasted. He can redeem and work through all things for His purpose and our good.
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” — Isaiah 55:8 (NLT)
“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.” — Romans 8:28 (NLT)
All of these phrases might seem truthful and even comforting at first, but clichés don’t sustain us—it’s God’s truth that does. Instead, when life gets messy, lean into God’s Word for wisdom, and pray for His guidance. He offers real hope, grace, and mercy in times of need. Jesus didn’t come to reinforce our comfort—He came to lead us toward transformation.

Bible Color-Coding Exercise
If you’re using a Bible color-coding system, choose a color you’ve designated for Wisdom, Truth, or God’s Character—whatever fits best for you. As you highlight each verse — take it one step further:
In the margin, write down the incorrect phrase you want to remember as false (like “God helps those who help themselves”), and then underneath it, write the correct truth from Scripture. This not only strengthens your understanding, but it also becomes a personal reference the next time you encounter those popular sayings.
