Some days feel like we’re trudging through thick mud—slow, messy, and exhausting.
You might feel stuck in a muddy season of life too. Maybe you’re unsure how to move forward, or you’re just trying to make it through without sinking further. If that’s you, know this: you don’t have to stay stuck.
Here are five positive habits that can help shift your mindset, lighten your load, and bring renewed energy to your day.
Be Kind
You’ve seen the T-shirts and memes: “If you can’t be kind, be quiet.” It’s catchy because it’s true. Many of us were raised with the basics—say please and thank you, treat others how you want to be treated—but those simple habits still matter deeply today.
Kindness isn’t about being passive or people-pleasing. It’s about choosing empathy and humility, especially when conversations get hard. It’s thinking of others before ourselves, even in small ways.
A great place to start? Practice random acts of kindness. Hold the door open. Send a thoughtful note. Compliment a stranger. These moments ripple outward more than we realize.
Make a Difference
Kindness in action is powerful—especially when it lifts someone else’s burden.
One of my blogging friends, Martha, and her 4-year-old great-granddaughter, Lia, are proof of this. Lia recently hosted her annual bake sale for the Alzheimer’s Association, offering treats (even for dogs!) to raise funds for a cause close to their hearts.
You don’t need to start big to make a difference. Is there a cause you care about? Can you host a fundraiser, donate gently used items, or give your time to a local charity or community project? There are even virtual volunteer opportunities from the comfort of your home.
Be Positive
Negativity is sneaky—and contagious. It not only drains your energy, but it affects those around you too.
One simple way to build a habit of positivity is by counting your blessings. It doesn’t have to be grand. Maybe it’s the dog not getting into the trash, or that the dishwasher ran without leaking. Gratitude rewires your brain to notice the good—even when life is hard.
Try ending your day by thinking of three things you’re thankful for. It can reset your mindset and even help you sleep better.
And don’t forget to smile. Often. It’s free and more powerful than you think.
Manage Stress Well
Not all stress is bad. A little can give you energy and motivation. But chronic, unmanaged stress? That’s a silent drain on your health, mood, and relationships.
Midlife comes with its own set of stressors—caregiving, health issues, life transitions. That’s why managing stress isn’t optional; it’s essential.
Make time for self-care, movement, prayer or meditation, and regular rest. Learn what helps you recharge—and protect that time. For helpful resources, visit stress.org or the American Heart Association’s stress management page.
Look Forward to Growth
You’ve probably heard the phrase: “Grow through what you go through.” And it’s true—our challenges can lead to transformation when we allow them to teach us.
Maybe you’ve faced job loss, health issues, or simply feel off course. Can you reframe the hardship into an opportunity? What’s one small way you could learn, pivot, or begin again?
Start by setting realistic goals. Break them into simple steps. Growth doesn’t have to be fast—it just has to be faithful.
Live It Out
- Choose one of these five habits and put it into practice this week.
- Start small: one act of kindness, one gratitude list, one quiet walk, one helpful gesture.
- Write down what helped you feel a little more unstuck.
Small, intentional habits lead to meaningful progress. Even muddy roads can lead to beautiful destinations—especially when you’re walking in hope.
