“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” — Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
As the new year starts, many of us in midlife find ourselves reflecting on our sense of purpose. We wonder if we’re still making a difference, still meant for the roles we hold, or still needed—especially as life changes and responsibilities shift. Some of the things we once poured ourselves into may be in the past, and the road ahead might not seem as clear as it once was.
Scripture reminds us that God’s plans aren’t limited by age, status, or accomplishments. We are His handiwork—some translations even say “masterpiece”—women who are carefully created, purposefully positioned, and always welcome to take part in meaningful service.
Serving God does not always look like large commitments or visible leadership. Often, it takes shape through faithfulness in small, ordinary acts. A listening ear. A handwritten note. A creative gift offered quietly. A willingness to help where there is need.
The apostle Paul reminds us that God has already laid out good works for us—not as a heavy load to bear, but as a path to follow. Serving isn’t about forcing something to happen; it’s about stepping into what’s already there as we listen and respond to God’s guidance.
Every season of life offers new chances to serve. What once called for strength and energy may now be guided by wisdom, insight, and compassion. God doesn’t let the years behind us go to waste—He weaves our experiences into service that matches who we are becoming.
When we share our gifts—whether creative or practical, seen or unseen—they become a form of worship. True service comes from gratitude, not duty, and overflows from a heart transformed by God’s grace.
As you look ahead to the year before you, consider this: not “What more should I do?” but “Where is God inviting me to serve right now?”
Living It Out:
Take a few moments this week to reflect on the gifts, experiences, or creative abilities God has given you. Ask Him where one small act of service might bless someone else this month, and take a simple step forward in faith.
