If you’re anything like me, your list of books to read keeps growing faster than you can finish them. Between work, home, errands, and everyday life, finding uninterrupted reading time isn’t always easy.
That’s one reason I’ve come to appreciate audiobooks. Whether I’m driving, crafting, walking, or doing chores, they allow me to enjoy great books during moments that might otherwise go unused.
If you’re ready to give audiobooks a try—or simply want more places to find them—here are the resources I return to again and again.
Start with Free Audiobooks
Curious about audiobooks but not sure where to start? Luckily, there are free platforms that makes jumping in easy.
- Libby – My first recommendation for almost everyone. If you have a library card, Libby gives you free access to thousands of audiobooks and eBooks from your local library through an easy-to-use app.
- Hoopla – If your library offers Hoopla, it’s another excellent option. Along with audiobooks, you’ll also find eBooks, movies, music, and more—all free with your library card.
- Open Culture -Looking for classics? Open Culture offers free public-domain audiobooks from authors such as Jane Austen, Mark Twain, Leo Tolstoy, and H.G. Wells.
Build Your Own Library
If you’re ready to explore premium options, there are plenty of services that offer extensive libraries, with a choice of an audiobook to keep, for a monthly fee.
Chirp Books – This has become my favorite place to buy audiobooks. I use it the most because there are no monthly fees, and I can purchase titles outright—often at surprisingly deep discounts. (I get many good cozy titles for 3.99 and less).) Because I own the books, I don’t have to worry about library waitlists or keeping up with a subscription.
Audible – Amazon’s audiobook service offers a monthly membership where you receive one title each month to keep. With Audible Plus, you not only get a monthly title but also unlimited access to a curated selection of originals, audiobooks, and podcasts—all included in your subscription.
Everand – (formerly Scribd’s eBook and audiobook service) offers a subscription with access to a large catalog of audiobooks, eBooks, magazines, and podcasts
Audiobooks.com – No membership required. Buy titles individually, plus enjoy exclusive discounts on select books. It’s a flexible option for those who prefer buying audiobooks without a monthly commitment.
Building an audiobook library doesn’t have to be expensive. Between library apps, discounted purchases, and subscription services, there are plenty of ways to find stories you’ll enjoy without filling another bookshelf.
I still love the feel of a printed book in my hands, but audiobooks have opened the door to reading in moments that would otherwise be lost. Whether you’re taking your first listen or adding to an existing collection, I hope these resources help you discover your next great read.
