Book Review: “The Women of Easter” by Liz Curtis Higgs

When Liz Curtis Higgs releases a new nonfiction title, it is a must-read for me. Her retelling of Bible history and personalization of characters make it impossible to stop reading. The same can be said about her new release: The Women of Easter.

This book does not give separate biographies of the women discussed: sisters Mary and Martha, Mary, mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene and others. Instead, Liz unfolds the entire Easter story: the step-by-step, chronological journey of Jesus’ last days incorporating passages from each of the gospels and weaving in the lives of women and their importance to Jesus’ ministry.

These women had such perseverance, staying close to Jesus through the crucifixion and burial. “This is one of the most important lessons these women teach us. Where He leads, follow Jesus. Whatever pain you are enduring, keep your eyes on Jesus. Even when hope seems gone, stay close to Jesus.” (author, p. 165)

You will read about Mary and Martha’s love and dedication for their beloved friend Jesus; Mary, the mother of Jesus at the Crucifixion; Mary Magdalene and her proclamation of the Resurrection; plus, other women who had a significant part of Jesus’ ministry, some mentioned by name in the Gospels.

In addition to the accounts so lovingly personalized by the author, there are the accounts of Jesus’ entry to Jerusalem, the betrayal, and the crucifixion, with additional commentary to make the story come even more alive.

The author also provides a study/discussion guide in the back of the book, which makes this title an excellent choice for a book club.
