Book Review: "Fight Back with Joy" by Margaret Feinberg

Margaret Feinberg is on my list of favorite bible teachers. After reading her book, Wonderstruck, I was eager to learn more from her latest, Fight Back with Joy: Celebrate More. Regret Less. Stare Down Your Greatest Fears.

As a regular follower of Margaret’s blog, I was already aware of her fierce battle with cancer, and her now remission. When I saw this title, I was surprised — more than a little — that it was about JOY.

With respect for Margaret’s Bible knowledge and teaching, I already planned to read this book before I knew what it was about. And I was curious!

Margaret is a skilled storyteller, and in this book, she gives a transparent, straightforward account of her journey (with some humor too). She shares her discovery that joy isn’t just whimsy, but a real weapon to use for fighting adversity.

There is so much to learn from this book — my highlighter pen was busy marking all the statements of wisdom to remember.

Helpful to me was the bonus chapter at the end of the book, “5 Things Those Facing Crisis Can’t Tell You (But Wish They Could).”  This chapter was an experienced guide to follow when a family member is going through a crisis of their own.

Even if you think that her experiences with cancer cannot apply to you, I encourage you to read it regardless. We all need to practice the defiant joy that she describes.
